Wonderful experience to take a helicopter ride to get to the top of the glacier to see the fantastic views! Better stay here a night or two, just in case you cannot fly at the time booked, the weather keeps changing, it might look like a very sunny day on the ground but it might be too cloudy on the top for the helicopter to get you up there.A walk is nice too, a few minutes drive from the township there is a big parking area, walking from there to the glacier you can see fantastic water falls on the way, you can also see what the global warming really can do, marks on the way to show where the glacier used to be years ago.

Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand is a true marvel of nature, with its massive ice formations and stunningly beautiful surroundings. Visitors can take a guided tour of the glacier, walking on the ice and exploring its unique features, such as crevasses and ice caves. The glacier is also surrounded by lush rainforest, providing a picturesque contrast between the icy blue tones of the glacier and the vibrant greens of the trees. A visit to Franz Josef Glacier is a chance to witness the power and beauty of nature up close, and enjoy a truly unforgettable adventure in one of New Zealand's most spectacular landscapes.

What a wonderful experience from start to finish. Very professional, warm. welcoming and accommodating. Poppy was our pilot and a great host. Yes the experience is an expense but well worth it for seeing the two glaciers and putting the mountain range magnitude into perspective. Highly recommended.

If you have limited time and can't afford a helicopter there are better things to see. Yes the valley is cool and there are a few waterfalls but what you can see of the glacier from the top car park is all you can see from the top of the forest path as it looks like since 2020 the river changed direction and the old path is gone .So you can see a tiny bit of ice which doesn't warrant the effort if you are travelling just for this.I visited in 2000 and was able to walk straight onto to the ice with a group and it was pretty amazing so it's probably 5 stars if you get in a helicopter etc.The picture is Peters pool and the white bit is all that you will see of the glacier if you take the forest walk.

The glacier is amazing -There are plenty of various trekking routes but none for understandable reasons , get you near to the actual glacier.Heli / trekking excursions are available but booked out months in advance and coming with a hefty price tag of least $500 - $600 pp.We did a 30min helicopter ride over both glaciers & landing on Fox to take photos for about 8mins - it was truly a fantastic experience. The actual town of Franz Josef - there is nothing to do there and when we visited (jan 2023) everywhere had acute staff shortages meaning delays to all types of food /drink service.

Magic place to visit. We took a helicopter ride with Heli line and our pilot was awesome. The views are amazing the glacier landing is something I will always remember. If you're going to NZ this is a must visit place.

Incredible to see this glacier! It is about an hour and a half round trip walk to the base of the glacier. Along the way there are signs that show you dates when the glacier was still reaching closer so over the years this walk might get longer as climate change continues. On the back of the signs there is a call to action to act on climate change and spread the word as it is sad to see where the glacier used to be but is not anymore. In general, a decent amount of parking here. Not too busy when we went in the morning. A couple of waterfalls on the way. You cross a bit of a creek from the glacier and some rocky terrain so definitely wear comfortable shoes. A must see!

it might be good if you go on heli. Otherwise it's a hive of Asiatics that is only impressive in its ability to underwhelm due to the fact you simply can't see the glacier. It's not due to global warming, the track simply isn't long enough.
